Colorado Springs Schools Education has always been a top priority Colorado Springs. Metro Colorado Springs has several school districts. The four largest are:
Currently there over 150 elementary, 60 middle, 45 high schools in the metro area. Additionally there are over 50 private schools in the area. Recent Distinctions Judy McCollum, principal of Bates Elementary School in Colorado Springs School District 11, was named the 2007 Colorado National Distinguished Principal of the Year. Doherty High School principal Jill Martin, (also District 11) 2006 MetLife/NASSP Colorado High School Principal of the Year, was named the 2007 MetLife/NASSP National High School Principal of the Year! Each year, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and Met Life focus attention on the outstanding work principals do in middle schools and high schools across the country. Beyond High School Higher education continues to expand in Colorado Springs. The United States Air Force Academy is considered one of the premier universities in the nation. Colorado College is an excellent, private, liberal arts and sciences college located in downtown Colorado Spings. UCCS (University of Colorado at Colorado Springs) continues to build and grow with a total enrollment of over 7,500 gratuate and undergraduate students. Pikes Peak Community College is an accredited two-year college with campus locations throughout the metro area. Many other private business or trade schools are located in the Colorado Springs area.
