Pikes Peak Region - About Colorado Springs

Located in El Paso County, the beautiful city of Colorado Springs is highlighted by the majesty of Pikes Peak. At a city population nearing 350,000 and with a metro population nearing 500,000, Colorado Springs is the second largest city in Colorado and one of the 50 largest cities in the nation.

In 1871, General William Jackson Palmer, a civil war veteran, was traveling cross-country by train when he stopped in what is now Colorado Springs. Seeing the natural beauty, General Palmer became the driving force in creating the city. Colorado Springs began as a tourist destination but with the advent of the Gold Rush in nearby Cripple Creek, Colorado Springs and the entire Pikes Peak region began to boom.

Many wealthy, philanthropic families began to relocate to Colorado Springs bringing with them the willingness to invest in building the city into something special.

During World War II the Defense Department purchased land south of Colorado Springs to build Fort Carson Army Base. About a decade later the decision was made to build the Air Force Academy north of the city. Today, in addition to these facilities, Peterson AFB, Shriever AFB and Cheyenne Mountain AFB (NORAD) are all located within the Colorado Springs metro area.

The convenience in driving, the availability of major shopping malls and an airport offering direct flights to numerous major American cities, all contribute to the vibrancy of Colorado Springs.

Higher education continues to expand in Colorado Springs. The United States Air Force Academy is considered one of the premier universities in the nation. Colorado College is an excellent, private, liberal arts and sciences college located in downtown Colorado Spings. UCCS (University of Colorado at Colorado Springs) continues to build and grow with a total enrollment of over 7,500 gratuate and undergraduate students. Pikes Peak Community College is an accredited two-year college with campus locations throughout the metro area. Many other private business or trade schools are located in the Colorado Springs area.

In addition to the military and tourism, other major economic contributors include increasing high tech industry; manufacturing and work generated by many national, spiritually based, organizations. The U.S. Olympic Committee and many Olympic Training facilities are also located in Colorado Springs.
